  13. Well, basically the idea is that when you join your local LETS community, you
  14. agree to abide by the rules which (among other things) state that you will 
  15. endeavour to repay the community with whatever good or services you choose 
  16. to offer, in return for any goods or services you may receive.  So if you get 
  17. your lawn mowed by one member of the LETS group and agree to acknowledge them 
  18. say 30 units, you are now in commitment for 30 units which you will later 
  19. redeem by for example washing someone else's car.  Likewise the person who 
  20. mowed your lawn is now in acknowledgement for 30 units which they can use to
  21. get their hair cut by yet another member.  The sum total of the "currency 
  22. units" in the group is always zero, and there is no physical currency involved,
  23. just record-keeping.  The LETS administration provides the record keeping and 
  24. probably also some sort of newsletter and trading directory listing all the 
  25. offers and wanteds in that community.  Hope that helps!"
